The history of a wine glass.
History of a wine glass in different countries has its own history. Where did the rule that for every wine needs a glass? In 1950s, a German professor Claus Riedel noted that people have different opinions when they drink wine from different glasses. Wine glasses of different shapes affect on different receptors. The form should help to breathe and disclose bouquet of drink, because each wine has its interaction with oxygen.
Today there are many varieties of glasses designed for all types of wines. But there are three basic forms:
By volume the glasses vary between 140-180 ml for red wines and 70-100 ml for whites. The former have a more rounded shape, while the second – more elongated.
Wine glasses are made from a thin crystal of high purity and transparency. It’s desirable that it had no designs and blackouts. Also, it must be on a high comfortable leg. Of modern manufacturers can recommend firms Riedel glasses and Bohemia.
And remember, the real taste of wine can be only in the correct glass. Don’t forget this important truth.
The right forms and materials
Depends on the configuration of a glass of wine perception. The shape of the glass determines the space located above the wine, which is evaporated. This forms an aromatic layer. In addition also changes the location of the mouth, where the wine pours first.
Human language is designed so that different tastes very strongly felt at various points. For example, the tip of the tongue responds well to the sweet, side – on the sour, and the far side – for bitter. The shape of the glass can vary the taste. Wide glass makes us drink wine in small sips. Narrow neck makes head back slightly tip over, allowing wine to achieve the remote part of the tongue.
The ideal wine glass is made of thin glass with a high degree of transparency and purity. Wine should be clearly visible in the glass, so the high-end glasses do without drawings and engravings. Basic forms of wine glasses – is tulip and ball. Form for red wine should be more rounded, and for the white – more elongated. For young white wines recommended slightly opened at the edges glass. And for older wines wide at the bottom and tapering to the top glass. For old red wine the glasses are preferred wide at the base, curved outward edges. For young red wine it’s glass with wide base and tapering to the edge.

Glasses for red wine. Type Bordeaux.
Despite the name, this glass is not only for wines from Bordeaux. Its main purpose – red wines with high tannin (often a cabernet sauvignon and merlot). This form is universal and this type glass can be used daily, including for table wines. Rim of the glass without rounding directs the wine to the central part of the tongue, where the receptors are especially sensitive to sweet taste. It serves to emphasize the fruit and soften bitter tannins the harshness at the first sip.
Glasses for red wine. Type Burgundy.
These glasses were created for Burgundian Pinot noir (and also for Barolo and Barbaresco). These wines have a very intense, but the thin, volatile and iridescent smell. Glass designed to capture and reveal them. Burgundy glass is for wines with moderate tannins and a fairly high acidity. Wide rim of the glass sends the wine to the front of the tongue, accentuating focus on sweets wine, which offsets the acidity. The volume of Burgundy glass more than a glass of Bordeaux (700-750 ml versus 600-620 ml), and form of bowl like a ball (sometimes called a balloon). It allows the wine more contact with oxygen. At the top the glass is narrower, allowing concentrate and keeps odors inside. A large ring distributes wine not only to the center of the tongue, but to the edges, close to the cheeks, making feel it more fresh and subtle.
Glasses for white wine.
Dry white wine is drunk from wine glasses, resembling the shape of a glass of Bordeaux. But the volume of glass significantly lower (up to 340 ml).

(White wines are served at a temperature lower than the red.) And the area of contact with the warm air around the glass at such lower. You can have two types of glasses for white wines. Small glass for light white wines and dry rosy wines. And larger (340 ml) for more serious white wine (such as Chardonnay, aged in barrels).
Glasses for champagne and sparkling wines.
Everybody saw how champagne is poured into large pyramid of glasses. Legend told that the shape of these glasses has been made by the form of the breast of Marie Antoinette, which loved champagne like crazy. However, progress has moved forward and is now mainly used glasses elongated (flute).
If the neck is narrow, the glass is suitable for most champagne and sparkling wines. There should be a small dimple on the bottom of the bowl that perlage (streams of bubbles) was more subtle and sustainable.
